Trump bids to take over Gaza

President Donald Trump’s controversial proposal for the U.S. to take control of Gaza and resettle its population was swiftly rejected by Palestinian leaders, Middle Eastern governments, and others around the world on Wednesday.

Trump unveiled the idea during a White House press conference with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu. He suggested the U.S. could “own” Gaza, clear unexploded bombs, and revitalize the area economically, but did not provide specifics on relocating over two million Palestinians or managing the region.

While Netanyahu supported the idea, claiming it could “change history,” the Palestinian Authority, Hamas, and numerous countries—including Egypt, Turkey, China, Britain, France, and Germany—strongly opposed it. Hamas called the plan “racist” and warned it would worsen regional instability.

Trump’s vague proposal raised concerns, especially about the potential displacement of Palestinians from Gaza, which has been devastated by conflict. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas rejected the plan, calling it a violation of international law.

Further complicating matters, Trump suggested that Gaza could be rebuilt without involving its current inhabitants, echoing his previous remarks about resettling Palestinians in Egypt or Jordan—an idea met with firm rejection from both nations. Trump did not clarify how he would enforce the plan, hinting that U.S. military presence might be necessary.

Meanwhile, Netanyahu emphasized his confidence in eventually normalizing ties with Saudi Arabia, though Saudi officials reaffirmed their stance that a Palestinian state must be established first. Other world leaders, including those from Turkey, Britain, France, and China, condemned the proposal, insisting that Gaza should remain Palestinian.
