Tarique Rahman Calls for Early Election to Restore Stability and Implement Reforms

BNP acting chairman Tarique Rahman has reaffirmed the need for an early national election to restore stability, implement reforms, and address the pressing challenges facing the nation.

Tarique made this call on Sunday while speaking at a training workshop titled “31-Point Proposal to Repair the State Structures and Public Engagement”, organized by the Dhaka Bar Unit of Jatiotabadi Ainjibi Forum at the Dhaka Bar Lawyers Association Auditorium in Dhaka.

“It is surely needed to restore stability soon in the country. We believe that once stability is restored, it will be possible to gradually bring the country back from the brink of destruction,” he stated.

Addressing concerns about whether an election alone can solve all problems, Tarique argued: “Since stability will return after the election and reforms will begin, the severity of the problems will gradually subside.”

He also criticized those advocating for local government elections before a national election, urging them to consider the prevailing instability in the country.

“If we look around, we can see instability. There is instability everywhere,” he remarked.

Tarique emphasized that the main responsibility of the interim government should be to facilitate the people’s decision-making and ensure a fair political environment. However, he accused the government of deviating from this objective, citing contradictory statements from various officials.

“They are probably deviating from their goal to some extent. Confusion is being created by the different statements from government figures. When there is political instability, confusion naturally arises,” he said.

He warned that without political stability, no amount of reforms or policy changes would be effective.

“The main goal of the interim government and everyone should be to restore stability as soon as possible,” he reiterated.

Tarique further stated that delaying parliamentary functionality would only fuel unrest, controversy, and economic instability, ultimately harming the country.

Speaking about BNP’s 31-point reform proposal, he described it as the party’s sacred responsibility, emphasizing that BNP was the first to present such a proposal to the nation.

“The 31-point reform proposal is not much different from what the interim government has suggested. However, since BNP introduced it first and made a commitment to the people, fulfilling this promise is our responsibility,” he said.

He concluded by stressing the necessity of a free and fair election to ensure genuine representation in parliament.

“There should be an election where the people of Bangladesh can give their true judgment. A parliament formed through a transparent and neutral election will be capable of implementing the necessary reforms,” he asserted.
