Government Sees Opportunity in 37% US Tariff Hike on Bangladeshi Products

Despite growing concern among exporters, especially in the garment sector, over the recent 37% tariff hike on Bangladeshi products by the United States, the government considers the development an opportunity rather than a crisis, according to Chief Adviser’s Press Secretary Shafiqul Alam.

Speaking at an emergency meeting held on Saturday at the State Guest House Jamuna, Shafiqul Alam assured that the government would take all necessary steps to boost exports globally. The meeting was presided over by Chief Adviser Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus.

Addressing reporters prior to the meeting, Shafiqul Alam stated, “You can rest assured that following today’s discussion, decisions will be made to increase Bangladesh’s exports to the US and other Western markets — not reduce them.”

He added that a separate, extensive meeting with the country’s leading business figures had already been held earlier in the day at the Bangladesh Investment Development Authority (BIDA). Exporters provided input and suggestions, which were to be reviewed in the government’s policy discussions.

“These exporters are the key players in our international trade. Their recommendations are valuable and will be carefully analyzed before any decision is finalized,” Shafiqul said.

Expressing optimism, he added, “We believe this initiative will enhance our exports and solidify Bangladesh’s presence in the global market.”

He concluded by noting that Bangladesh could benefit even more under the evolving global trade dynamics.
