US Acknowledges Bangladesh’s Security Efforts, Condemns Violence Against Minorities

US State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce has stated that Washington condemns any act of violence or intolerance against minority communities in any country. She also welcomed steps taken by Bangladesh’s interim government to ensure the safety and security of all citizens.

The issue of Bangladesh arose during Wednesday’s US State Department briefing, where Bruce addressed concerns raised by US Director of National Intelligence (DNI) Tulsi Gabbard.

A journalist questioned Bruce regarding Gabbard’s remarks, where she warned of a “growing threat” of extremism in Bangladesh and alleged efforts to establish an Islamic caliphate. The journalist also referenced Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus’s strong denial of these concerns.

The journalist further noted that despite Yunus’s denial, a large pro-caliphate rally was recently held at Dhaka University, raising concerns about the situation. They asked whether the US was considering imposing sanctions on Yunus’s government in response.

Bruce reiterated Washington’s stance against violence toward minority communities and expressed support for Bangladesh’s security efforts. However, she did not directly comment on whether sanctions were being considered.

Previously, Gabbard stated in an interview with NDTV World that the US remains deeply concerned about the situation in Bangladesh, particularly regarding the persecution of religious minorities.

Bangladesh’s interim government later dismissed these claims, asserting that linking the country to the idea of an “Islamist caliphate” is baseless and undermines efforts toward peace.
