Students and Civilians Raid Former Lawmaker Tanveer Imam’s Residence in Dhaka

A group of students and civilians stormed the residence of former lawmaker Tanveer Imam in Dhaka’s Gulshan around midnight on Tuesday, alleging the presence of illegal arms, drugs, and large sums of money.

The raid took place at House 8I on Road 81 in Gulshan 2. While no law enforcement officers were initially present, journalists from various media outlets covered the incident live.

According to witnesses, an announcement about the raid circulated on social media and news platforms around 11:30 PM. By midnight, over 100 students and civilians had gathered near Justice Shahabuddin Ahmed Park before proceeding to the residence.

A security guard attempted to prevent entry, but some students climbed over the gate and unlocked it for the rest of the crowd. Once inside, they searched every room, checking suitcases, drawers, and safes, as per witness accounts.

About 30 minutes into the raid, Gulshan police arrived, followed by a significant military presence outside the house.

Rajib, a student representative, told reporters they had received “confidential information” regarding illegal arms, drugs, and cash at the residence. However, no such items were found during the search.

Police questioned the individuals involved and gradually dispersed the crowd. Officers later inspected the house but did not find any illegal materials.

None of Tanveer Imam’s family members were present at the time. Only house staff and security guards were found inside, according to local reports.

The police have not issued an official statement on the incident.

Tanveer Imam, a former lawmaker from Sirajganj-4 and son of the late HT Imam, political adviser to ex-prime minister Sheikh Hasina, was previously arrested in connection with the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement. He also faces allegations of accumulating illegal wealth and engaging in illicit activities.
