Starmer Welcomes Zelenskiy Amid Tensions with Trump

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer warmly welcomed Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy in London on Saturday following Zelenskiy’s tense meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House, reports Reuters.

During their meeting at Downing Street, Starmer reassured Zelenskiy of the UK’s unwavering support, stating, “We stand with you and Ukraine for as long as it may take.” A cheering crowd greeted the Ukrainian leader, demonstrating the UK’s solidarity with Ukraine amid its ongoing conflict with Russia.

The meeting comes after Trump threatened to withdraw U.S. support for Ukraine in an extraordinary Oval Office discussion on Friday. European leaders, including French President Emmanuel Macron, have since expressed strong backing for Zelenskiy, underscoring the growing divide between the U.S. and its European allies over the war.

Zelenskiy is also set to meet King Charles on Sunday at the Sandringham estate. The British monarch has previously praised the resilience of the Ukrainian people. Meanwhile, Starmer, during his White House visit, handed Trump a written invitation from the king for a state visit, a move that could make Trump the first U.S. president in modern times to receive two state visits from a British monarch.
