Home Adviser Lieutenant General (retd) Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury accused the Awami League and its allies of trying to destabilize the country by using vast sums of money to incite unrest.
“But we will not let this happen,” he declared during an emergency press briefing at his residence at 3 a.m. on Monday.
He warned that such actions would not be tolerated and promised severe consequences for those involved.
“Those responsible will lose their sleep; they will have no place anywhere,” he stated.
Jahangir further mentioned that he had instructed security forces to intensify operations starting Tuesday. “If they fail to perform well, I will take strict action against them,” he added.
Dismissing concerns about a deteriorating law and order situation, he asserted, “There is no way for the situation to deteriorate—it will only improve.”
Earlier, a group of students protested at Dhaka University around 1 a.m. on Monday, issuing a 24-hour ultimatum for the home adviser’s resignation.
Addressing the demand, Jahangir argued that if progress was truly being made, there was no reason for him to step down.
