US President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that he expects to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin in Saudi Arabia for Ukraine peace talks, following a “lengthy and highly productive” phone call between the two leaders.
Trump, who has vowed to end the war quickly, dismissed concerns that Ukraine was being sidelined, saying he had also spoken with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky. “Like President Putin, he wants to make peace,” Trump stated.
The Kremlin confirmed the call lasted nearly 90 minutes and that Putin had invited Trump to Moscow. Trump said Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, who recently facilitated a US-Russia prisoner swap, would also play a role in negotiations.
Pentagon chief Pete Hegseth stirred controversy by calling Ukraine’s goal of reclaiming pre-2014 borders “illusionary” and its NATO membership bid “not realistic”—both key Russian demands. Trump, however, denied that the US was conceding to Moscow’s conditions, calling NATO membership for Ukraine “impractical.”
Meanwhile, Zelensky is set to meet US officials at the Munich Security Conference to discuss security guarantees. European leaders insist that any peace deal must include Ukraine and its allies.
Trump has previously praised Putin, noting that the Russian leader even used his campaign slogan, “COMMON SENSE,” in their discussions. However, concerns remain in Kyiv and European capitals over the potential terms of a US-Russia agreement.
