In a major crackdown, Gazipur police confirmed the arrest of 83 individuals during “Operation Devil Hunt” on Sunday morning. Among them, 40 were taken into custody from five police stations in Gazipur district, while 43 were arrested from eight police stations in the city.

Reports suggest that many of those arrested are leaders and activists of the Awami League.

Gazipur Metropolitan Police (GMP) Additional Commissioner (Crime and Operations) Taherul Haque Chauhan stated, “43 people were arrested across eight police stations in Gazipur city.” However, their identities were not immediately disclosed.

In the district, law enforcement officials confirmed that Sreepur Upazila Jubo League’s vice-president was arrested on Saturday night.

Other arrests were also made in different areas: nine in Joydebpur, three in Kaliakoir, and seven in Kaliganj. Among those detained are several Awami League leaders, including presidents and secretaries of various party units.

Gazipur Superintendent of Police (SP) Dr. Chowdhury Jaber Sadek stated that “the GMP, along with the army and RAB, conducted overnight operations on Saturday, leading to the arrests.”

According to GMP Additional Commissioner Taherul Haque Chauhan, “18 of the 43 city arrests were linked to the recent attack on students at the ancestral home of former liberation war affairs minister Advocate AKM Mozammel Haque in Dhirashram. The remaining 25 were arrested as part of the ongoing operation.”
