Passersby discovered a body hanging from the top branches of a tree on the premises of Dhaka University’s Science Annex building on Wednesday morning.
Upon spotting the body, they alerted the police and fire service, prompting its recovery by Shahbagh police at around 9am.
Details about his identity remain unknown, but according to police the deceased was approximately 45 years old.
Sheikh Hadiuzzaman, sub-inspector at Shahbagh police station, said locals had identified the man as a vagabond.
“The man reportedly lived on a sidewalk in the area and was known to have mental health issues,” Hadiuzzaman said.
“Preliminary findings suggested that he climbed the tree on Tuesday night and hanged himself. However, further investigation is underway,” he added.
After completing legal formalities, police sent the body to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for autopsy.
